What Is Nitrous Oxide Used For in Endodontics?
Used in endodontics to help manage patient anxiety and pain during root canal procedures.
It is inhaled through a mask over the nose, providing quick-acting, adjustable relaxation while the patient remains conscious and able to communicate. A major benefit is the rapid recovery; once the gas is turned off and pure oxygen is administered, the patient can leave the office without an escort.
How it works and its benefits
Fast-acting
Patients typically begin to feel relaxed within a few minutes of inhaling the gas
Adjustable
The level of sedation can be adjusted in real-time to suit the patient's needs throughout the procedure
Conscious sedation
The patient remains awake, able to respond to the dentist, and can breathe normally through their nose
Reduces anxiety
It is highly effective for nervous patients or those with a strong gag reflex
Quick recovery
After the procedure, breathing pure oxygen for a few minutes
If nitrous oxide is right for you, we will review your medical history, explain how it works, and monitor you closely so you remain calm and comfortable during your procedure.
Frequently asked questions about Nitrous Oxide
Can nitrous oxide help if my tooth is very painful or hard to numb?
Yes—especially in certain “hot tooth” situations. A randomized clinical study found that using 30%–50% nitrous oxide significantly improved the success rate of the inferior alveolar nerve block in mandibular teeth with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (compared with room air/oxygen). In practice, that can be helpful when achieving profound anesthesia is difficult.
Can I drive myself home, and is nitrous oxide safe for everyone?
Because nitrous oxide wears off quickly once we switch you to oxygen, most patients feel back to normal soon after treatment. We’ll confirm you’re ready for discharge before you leave. Nitrous also works best when you can breathe comfortably through your nose, so significant congestion may mean we recommend a different comfort option.
