Immediate Care Matters
Traumatic dental injuries often occur as a result of an accident or sports injury. The majority of these injuries are minor – chipped teeth. It’s less common to dislodge your tooth or have it knocked completely out but these injuries are more severe. Treatment depends on the type, location and severity of each injury. Regardless of the extent of the injury, your tooth requires immediate examination by a dentist or an endodontist. Sometimes, your neighboring teeth suffer an additional, unnoticed injury that can only be detected by a thorough dental exam.
Why Endodontists Are Essential?
Endodontists are dentists who specialize in treating traumatic dental injuries. With their advanced skills, techniques and technologies they often can save injured teeth. If you have a cracked or injured tooth, find an endodontist near you right away. Most endodontists offer tremendous flexibility in accommodating emergency cases, including weekends in some instances. You’ll have relief from your pain and likely save your tooth, so act as quickly as possible
Frequently asked questions about Traumatic Dental Injuries
What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?
Treat this as an emergency. Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root) and get it into a “tooth-friendly” liquid immediately—ideally a specialized storage solution (like HBSS). If that’s not available, milk is a good alternative, and saline can work as a backup. Then come in as soon as possible—timing has a big impact on whether we can save the tooth.
Why do I need follow-up visits after a dental injury, even if I feel okay?
Because some of the most serious issues—like pulp damage or root resorption—can develop quietly and show up later. Early follow-ups give us the best chance to catch problems quickly and intervene before they become harder to treat.
What can I expect at the exam after dental trauma?
First, we’ll do a thorough clinical and radiographic evaluation. If the injury is more severe, we may recommend 3D imaging (CBCT). We’ll also test the tooth’s response (often using cold testing) to help us monitor the nerve over time. And because dental trauma is also a head injury, we’ll screen for red flags that could suggest concussion or a more serious issue before focusing only on the teeth.
